Sleepy yesterday, doing better today - Day 72 - Morning (4/19)

Yesterday was an okay, but sleepy day for Bill. He received a platelet transfusion early in the day and developed a slight reaction to the platelets. This has happened to him before so usually he takes some Benadryl before hand. Unfortunately, he did not get enough (he usually gets more before platelets), so he started to break out in a rash. So he was given some more Benadryl to calm the reaction down. Well this made him very sleepy as expected! So when I arrived around 1:00, he was asleep and slept until about 5:00pm. He was quite groggy and VERY stiff and his joints/muscles ached when he woke up. This is due to the shots of Neupogen he has been receiving daily which stimulates his white blood cell growth- a side effect is aching joints. He then walked around the room for a while to loosen up his muscles and after being up out of bed for a while felt better. He was able to take 3 Boost chocolate protein mixtures yesterday which is great! He still has not had any solid food, but I am hoping today he will try something.

Ryan was on-call at the hospital last night in the ICU area which is literally 2 floors up in the same building! So he was able to stop by and hang out with Bill when he had a few free moments in the evening. Mom, Dad and I were able to enjoy a lovely dinner at the Nora Cafe in Indianapolis. I was very happy that Mom was able to get out for the evening as she has been in the hospital since Tuesday morning when Bill was admitted. We had a lovely dinner.

The doctor's will allow Bill to come home once his white blood cell count have increased. This morning, he had a slight increase to .3 white blood cells which is great! Last time he was in the hospital, his white blood cell count stayed around .1 - .2 for a while, but once they started climbing, they climbed pretty fast! He is still taking his antibiotics, but no longer needs fluids or oxygen. Hopefully by end of next week we will have Bill home with us again!!
